Ms. Shivan Ojah-Maharaj previously held the position of Marketing Director at Unicomer (Trinidad) Ltd leading all the brands of the business. Thereafter she transitioned to her current commercial role as the Head of Optical at Unicomer (Trinidad) Ltd where she now spearheads and provides executive leadership for the Courts Optical brand.
Under her directorship at Courts Optical, she has substantially increased the brand’s market share over the last five years. Courts Optical attained this continued growth against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic despite two extended lock down periods.
This noteworthy accomplishment is backed by her 20 years of sound commercial and marketing operations experience. She has a track record of boosting revenue in leading industries which include banking, manufacturing, and retail. She is proficient at analyzing figures and harnessing data to maximize performance and profit. This proficiency has made her resilient to pressure and confident in her communication with others. Her commitment to accountability, transparency and fairness has afforded her many opportunities, one of which includes her position on the Board of Governors at the University of Trinidad and Tobago; a position she currently holds.
Her fearless nature made her willing to venture into male dominated fields, where she was met with many challenges but discovered innovative and practical solutions to bring undeniable results, respect, and admiration to the office she holds. Her career has crossed international borders, having worked previously at Republic Bank in Trinidad, and thereafter taking her expert skills to Scotiabank in Canada. She is delighted to be provided with the opportunity to join the panel discussion at the AMCHAM’s Women’s Leadership Conference to share some of her successes and challenges, with hopes that it will inspire future female leaders to aim for excellence both in their personal and professional lives. Shivan believes that it is very important for every female to believe in herself despite any challenges that one may encounter towards their self-discovery journey.
Ms. Ojah-Maharaj holds an International Master of Business Administration with focus on International Marketing from the Arthur Lok Jack School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (with Honours), and a Certificate in e-Marketing from the Ryerson University, Toronto Canada. In her spare time, she brushes up on her bilingual skills, as a proficient Spanish speaker and on a late evenings Shivan is powerlifting to ensure that her health and wellbeing is looked after.
