Bio
As a commercial lawyer for over twenty-two years, Glenn Hamel-Smith is a Partner at M. Hamel-Smith & Co., and the Head of the Firm’s Banking & Finance Practice Group. He is admitted to practice law both in the State of Florida and in Trinidad and Tobago. His legal career began in 1998 in the International and Corporate Departments of one of the largest international law firms headquartered in Miami, before returning to Trinidad to join Hamel-Smith in 2002.

Glenn obtained his LEC from Hugh Wooding Law School and his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law as a Deans’ Honor Scholar. He also holds a Bachelors of Business Administration degree in International Business and Management Information Systems from Florida International University where he graduated at the top of his class as a Faculty Scholar.

Glenn’s legal practice focuses on bank finance (including secured and unsecured lending) and regulation, project finance, mergers and acquisitions, merger control, securities advisory matters and capital markets transactions, including IPOs. He is a trusted counsel to lenders, borrowers, arrangers, underwriters, securities companies, trustees and financial advisers and has been responsible for transactions valued at over a billion dollars in both local and US currency. He has published and co-published several articles on various topics including, corporate governance, securities laws, bank finance and regulations, merger control, taking security over collateral, and mergers and acquisitions.

A former vice-president of the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad & Tobago (AMCHAM T&T), Glenn currently serves as a director and as the corporate Secretary of AMCHAM T&T and formerly sat on the its Transparency Accountability and Governance Committee. He is also a former member of AMCHAM’s Legislative Committee where he served for over eight years, the last three of which he served as Chair. He is a former director of Trinidad Cement Limited and currently serves as the Chairman of Readymix (West Indies) Limited and as a director of Island Finance Trinidad & Tobago Limited. He is married with two children.
